SEEING & SEEN
PHOTOGRAPHY 1976 - 2019
My photographic project has involved seeking out perceptual fields and locations in which I engage with what can be readily seen and intuited. Within my carefully chosen subjects, I’ve sought to explore some of the ambiguities of the still, thinking of each image as an encapsulation of time: a summary of what seems to be true in the apparent present represented by each image, as well as a hint of what might have been that led up to that moment. I’ve also sought to imply something about the still’s immediate aftermath and the more distant future in which an image itself is inevitably relocated, i.e. what may be yet to come.
My intent has been to work in a way that is rigorously documentary, extracting stories and reportage from the fabric of everyday life. I have intended at the same time to always question the lazy and distancing habit within documentary practice to objectify minorities and the underclass. To that end, I’ve gone out of my way to photograph the haves. I’ve paid particular attention to finance and politics, where so much raw power resides and collects, and I’ve been led along the way to complement these still projects with moving image works that also explore this territory.
